Mixing

Joris Meijer and the team turn your recordings into a balanced stereo mix — in our control room in Amsterdam or offline from your delivered stems.

Engineer mixing at console with headphones.

A mix decides whether drums, bass, vocals and effects breathe together or mask each other. At Misfiredexa we mix sessions tracked here and projects recorded elsewhere, as long as files are organised and you left headroom.

Choose per-track offline mixing, hourly studio time with instant feedback, or an EP package up to five songs. Then move on to mastering; read headroom when sending stems before you upload.

Process

  1. Scope

Send track list, references and stems or a session export. We confirm format, sample rate and scope within 2 business days.

  2. Import

We align timelines, check phase and room bleed, and note missing elements before balancing.

  3. Mix pass

EQ, dynamics, panning, sends and automation until the song works on monitors and headphones.

  4. Revisions

You receive a stereo mixdown; up to 2 revision rounds are included per terms.

Offline vs in-studio

Offline per track (€185) suits a finished song with stems delivered. The engineer works independently and sends a mixdown for review. Studio hour (€88) helps when you want to listen in, compare quickly or block-book a long album. EP package (€720) covers up to five tracks with one coherent direction.

Unsure which fits? Describe your material on contact; we will not upsell a heavier model than you need.

Delivering stems

Supply WAV or AIFF, preferably 24-bit, one sample rate per project. Export from the same start point; label tracks clearly (Kick, Bass DI, Lead Vox, etc.). Leave headroom: peaks around -6 dBFS give room for EQ and compression.

Our article headroom and stems explains bouncing from Logic, Ableton or Pro Tools. Zip or cloud link with a short readme in Dutch or English is fine.

Sessions tracked at Misfiredexa

If you recorded in Amsterdam with us — vocals, live band or both — we often already hold the session on the desk. That saves import time and confusion over takes. Tell us which vocal comp is final and whether alternate takes stay available.

The live room (34 m²) sometimes adds room mics; we decide together whether they stay in the mix or stay muted.

Mix approach

We start with static balance: levels, pan, basic EQ and bus compression where it helps. Then detail: de-essing, reverbs, delays, parallel drum compression, sidechain choices. Automation lands on choruses, breaks and drops.

Reference tracks help, but we do not clone them blindly: loudness and genre norms differ. The aim is a mix that works on everyday speakers and earbuds, not only on our monitors.

When a choice is borderline we note A/B options in the delivery so you hear why a vocal sits back or why the bass is tighter. That also shows what to improve in pre-production on the next release.

Revisions and turnaround

Each mix job includes 2 revision rounds: send timestamps and concrete notes (for example “vocal at 0:45 slightly forward”). Major restructuring or new stems after delivery are out of scope and repriced.

Turnaround depends on queue and complexity; offline tracks are often back within five to ten business days, rush by agreement. Mention release deadlines upfront on contact.

Delivery formats

Default delivery is stereo mixdown WAV 24-bit/48 kHz. On request we also supply instrumental, TV mix without vocals, or mix-bus stems — agree in writing to avoid surprises. No mastered loudness here; that belongs to mastering.

Files via download; archive 24 months at Misfiredexa B.V. unless you request earlier deletion under privacy policy.

Studio context

Since 2021 we have mixed in a compact recording studio with 20 inputs and patchbay to outboard. Engineers know vocal and live workflows — useful when a last-minute vocal fix is needed. Address: Eerste Helmersstraat 78, 1054 DL Amsterdam; reach us via Tram 13 stops at Eerste Helmersstraat; from that stop it is about a 2-minute walk to number 78. From Amsterdam Centraal, tram 13 towards Amsterdam Sloterdijk takes roughly 15 minutes. By bike from Leidseplein it is about 7 minutes via Overtoom and De Clercqstraat..
